Treaty settlements negotiations - natural resources redress
The Government has developed guidelines to help when looking at iwi claims around natural resources, harbours and areas of the coast as part of the historical Treaty of Waitangi negotiations.
These guidelines exist to make sure that there is a fair and consistent way of looking at claims involving natural resources and harbours.
They cover such things as:
- the matters that must be considered when developing an arrangement to involve iwi in natural resource management
- the role of local authorities when arrangements are being negotiated
- consistency with existing laws, eg the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011 or the Resource Management Act 1991
- possible redress
- potential funding to support good management of the resources in the future.
