Workshops for public servants

Building capability to meaningfully engage with Māori is an area of continuous development for the public sector. The Office for Māori Crown Relations – Te Arawhiti has developed the following workshops to assist agencies.

Introduction to Engagement with Māori Workshop

Engagement workshops are part of the ongoing work Te Arawhiti is doing to ‘actively support Crown agencies to engage effectively with Māori’. Te Arawhiti has a responsibility to ensure that public sector agencies engage meaningfully with Māori to increase the opportunities for and quality of Crown Māori engagement and promote good practice.

Te Arawhiti has developed and published a framework for engagement which is taught through the engagement workshops. During the workshop, you will also get to hear directly from those whom your engagement approaches impact.

Te Arawhiti deliver these workshops to:

  • support the use and application of the Engagement Framework and Guidelines across the public sector
  • guide agencies and promote good practice in their engagement with Māori and
  • support broader efforts to build public sector capability.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Aotearoa History Workshop

As part of our Crown Capability system leadership role, Te Arawhiti is offering Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Aotearoa History training to our whanaunga across the public service.

In te ao Māori, you’ll often hear the saying “'Ka mua, ka muri', Walking backwards into the future”. This whakataukī speaks to the importance of understanding our shared history when making decisions about our collective future.

Engagement with Māori Planning 102 Workshop

Te Arawhiti is excited to be able to announce that it has developed a full-day Engagement with Māori Planning Workshop for public servants. This workshop builds on the theoretical knowledge learned in the Introduction to Engagement with Māori 101 workshops, which Te Arawhiti has been offering since 2019. 

This planning workshop provides participants with the opportunity to:

  • use Te Arawhiti’s Engagement with Māori guidelines, framework and template in the context of their own agency,
  • understand what best practice in engagement with Māori looks like,
  • have a completed engagement plan for their agency, and
  • understand where engagement can break down and how to reset engagement relationships.
