Applications made under the Marine and Coastal Area Act
For information about applications in the High Court please see the High Court page.
Applications to date
To date we have received 202 Crown engagement applications, 26 applications made to the High Court, and 181 applications made in both the High Court and Crown engagement. There are many overlapping applications both to the Crown and in the High Court. The Crown has acknowledged Crown engagement applications, and has been processing funding applications in the High Court.
Since 3 April 2017 we have made contact with groups to collect information that has been missing from their applications. Some applications are still missing vital information such as a map or a description of their application area. If you have received correspondence from us about missing information please get in touch with us: firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 0800-866222.
What are we focussing on now?
Our initial focus is on applications where the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, on behalf of the Crown, has already decided to engage. We are currently engaging with groups where the Crown had an existing commitment before 2017.

Groups in the same area
As part of our work with existing commitment groups we may also contact other applicant groups in the same general area.
Applications by regional council area
Crown enagement applications are published on separate pages according to regional council area. Each regional council area has a page. If an application falls into more than one jurisdiction it is listed on all relevant pages. Applications in the South Island are grouped together.
- Bay of Plenty
- Hawke’s Bay
- South Island
What happens next?
More information (including contact details and maps) will regularly be added as applications are processed and details confirmed.
The sequence and timing for determination of Crown engagement applications is being developed and information about this will be published here in due course.
Under Crown engagement the general public will be able to object to or support any application as part of a public enquiry process seeking submissions. This process has not started.
