| Application area | The Mangawhati/Mangapai Area is situated at the South Western area of Te Rerenga Paraoa. It is one of the key strategic areas of Patuharakeke for inland iwi and hapu, and for linking to iwi and hapu around Te Rerenga Paraoa during times of; tribal war, cultivation and harvesting seasons, and customary kaimoana harvesting. The physical aspect of this area is; the main Pa Site - Pakauhokio strategically placed at the highest point with the perfect view to the entire harbour and therefore other hapu and iwi Pa. The view point also takes in overlooking the entire Te Akau or Bream Bay to keep a look out for raiding war parties from the south. Leading out of the puna (spring) near Pakauhokio, flowing into streams you move into other features. Mangawhati (the name of one part of the peninsula spur) also leads to the Puke Atua Pa (the lower Pa) and then on to Ngawhakakoakoa (the lower spur). At the bottom of the peninsula are mara kai (cultivations), mahinga mataitai (customary seafood areas), and manu (bird) harvest areas in and around the intertidal area, plus other critical areas such as wahi tapu. Most of these practices are still carried out today.
